UCAS is easier to manage when families stop treating the deadline as the starting point. The strongest applications are normally assembled months earlier: university research, course choices, references, admissions tests and the written application all have their own lead times.

The 2027 application cycle in simple terms

Courses for 2027 entry became searchable on UCAS in spring 2026, and applicants were able to begin their application before submissions opened in September. The first major national deadline is 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time for Oxford, Cambridge and most courses in Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine. Most other undergraduate applications have an equal-consideration deadline of 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time.

Why the equal-consideration deadline matters

Applications received by the relevant equal-consideration deadline must be considered equally by universities. That does not mean every course closes immediately afterwards, but universities do not have to consider late applications once on-time applications have been assessed.

A sensible family timetable

  • Spring / early summer: research courses, entry requirements and university fit.
  • Summer: build the university shortlist, prepare admissions tests where relevant and gather material for the written application.
  • September: finalise choices, references and written responses; register for any tests that sit outside UCAS.
  • Before the relevant deadline: submit early enough to leave time for school checks and unexpected issues.
  • After submission: prepare for interviews, tests, offers and decision-making rather than assuming the process is finished.

The detail students often miss

Admissions-test registration is not necessarily automatic when a UCAS form is submitted. Universities can also have separate requirements for written work, portfolios or college-specific forms. Always check the course page of every university on the final shortlist.

Useful official sources

University requirements can change. Always check the relevant university and UCAS pages before acting on a deadline or admissions requirement.
