Oxford and Cambridge applications use the same UCAS form as other UK universities, but the process around that form is different enough that families should plan separately.

The deadline comes early

For 2027 entry, Oxford and Cambridge applications must reach UCAS by 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time. That means the statement, school reference, university choice and any college decision need to be ready well before many classmates submit.

One application, one university

Applicants normally choose either Oxford or Cambridge in a given undergraduate admissions cycle, not both. They may also choose a college or submit an open application, depending on the university and course.

Tests and written work may sit alongside UCAS

Many courses use additional assessments. Oxford has changed parts of its testing system for 2027 entry and now uses TMUA, ESAT and TARA for a number of subjects alongside the LNAT and UCAT where relevant. Some courses also request written work.

Interviews are academic

Oxford describes interviews as academic conversations similar to a short tutorial. Preparation should therefore focus on thinking aloud, responding to unfamiliar material and engaging with challenge — not memorising polished speeches.

Course-level competitiveness matters

Headline university acceptance rates can hide large subject differences. Applicants should understand the selection process for their specific course and use admissions statistics as context, not as a reason to apply for a subject they do not genuinely want to study.

University requirements can change. Always check the relevant university and UCAS pages before acting on a deadline or admissions requirement.
